In November, 12 students and two teachers represented elc International School Malaysia at the FOBISIA Music Festival 2014. Hosted by Harrow Beijing, the festival was six days of rehearsals, workshops, and performances. Cultural experiences and fun-filled activities included a visit to the Forbidden City, an acrobatics show at the Chaoyang Theatre, mask painting, playing with Chinese yoyos and a Chinese tea ceremony, all run by Harrow’s Mandarin department.
Music rehearsals helped improve the main repertoire, while workshops were run with varied options such as steel pans, composing, conducting and Dalcroze. During the school’s performance night, elcpresented a medley named “Stars”, which was enthusiastically received by the crowd.
One elc student, Daniel Liew, had solo oboe parts in several songs while Mimi Vorosmarthy and Tan Lok Yien had significant soprano solos in Under Pressure. elc lead teacher, Mr. Enoch, took the baton to conduct the junior strings performance of Toreadors and the Festival Orchestra for the Jesus Christ Superstar medley.
The elc team was also able to visit the Great Wall of China. It was a wonderful experience and the students were excited about having the opportunity to cross off what would be a major item on anyone’s bucket list.
