Choosing an International School

There are currently over 200 international schools in Malaysia. Each international school is unique in terms of its offerings such as the type of curriculum, the facilities available and boarding options.

The American curriculum is a rigorous, standards-based system that aims to educate the whole child. Within the United States, each state maintains the right to uphold standards of its selection, relevant to the state and region. American schools abroad do not have the authority to accredit their educational programs .This means that the curriculum must be endorsed in the United States by one of the six accreditation authorities. These authorities include the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSACS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Curriculum Structure

The International American Curriculum is a comprehensive educational framework adapted for international schools outside the United States. Beginning with the Early Years program, which focuses on play-based learning and socialisation, students’ progress through Elementary School, where they build strong foundations in core subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In Middle School, the curriculum broadens to include advanced topics in these subjects, as well as offerings in foreign languages, physical education, arts, and music. High School students engage in a college preparatory curriculum which includes rigorous courses in English, Mathematics, Sciences and Social Studies.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered, too, allowing students to pursue college-level studies and potentially earn college credit. Throughout their education, students are assessed through various methods, including quizzes, tests, and projects, and are prepared for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. The curriculum also emphasises extracurricular activities providing opportunities for sports, academic clubs, arts programs and community service initiatives, and in so doing fosters a holistic development approach.

In addition to academic excellence, the American Curriculum places a strong emphasis on preparing students for higher education and future careers. High school students receive guidance and counselling to navigate the college application process as well as assistance with university selection, essay writing for applications, and preparation for interviews
